Terry issues warning to Chelsea

Terry scored a late consolation against Roma with just 15 minutes to go

Chelsea skipper John Terry has warned his side that they must show more fighting spirit if they are to reach another Champions League final.

Terry criticised his side after the 3-1 defeat by Roma on Tuesday and hopes the result will give last season's runners-up a "kick up the backside".

"If we are going to perform like that we are going to get nowhere near the Champions League final," he said.

"We didn't show the fight that has got us here over the last few years."

Chelsea's disappointing display against the struggling Italian outfit means their lead at the top of Champions League Group A is cut to just one point with two games remaining.

And Terry says his side must make massive improvements if they are to return to the Stadio Olimpico for the final next May.

"The final is a big target and we want to come back here, but with that kind of performance and work-rate we have no chance," said Terry, who scored a late consolation for his side.

"We knew they had been struggling for results the last few months and that the pressure was all on them.

"In the first five minutes you could see the tension in their team, but we didn't get out of first gear all night, which is really disappointing.

"Everyone has seen how well we've been playing this season, the movement has been great and we have been fighting for each other.

"When you play anywhere in the world first and foremost you have to fight and show more determination than the opposition to win the game.

"If it comes down to quality, nine times out of 10 we are better than most sides.

"It has to start first and foremost with a desire to win. It was a terrible night for us really. We didn't get going. Overall it was disappointing that we didn't even fight, even after going 1-0 and 2-0 down."

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted he was concerned after seeing his side well beaten.

"When you give away three goals you do worry," he said. "You need to think why was this and what we can do in our next game.

"We gave too many opportunities to Roma. We made too many mistakes, made wrong passes and had bad positions."

But despite the result, which was made worse by the late dismissal of midfielder Deco, the coach remained upbeat about their qualification chances.

"It's true the group is open for all the teams," added Scolari. "All of the groups are difficult. We lost one game and there are other teams behind us.

"But we have to win one game and we are there while other teams might need to win two games.

"We now have two chances to win against Bordeaux and Cluj."

Scolari was also critical of the decision to show Deco a second yellow card with 10 minutes to go for taking a free-kick too quickly.

"I think if one Roma player had done what Deco did they would not have been sent off," he said.

"Nevertheless, I have good quality players in midfield to replace him for our next game."

CHELSEA are weighing up a shock move for Michael Owen in January.

Boss Phil Scolari has been told budget cuts mean he has around £10million to spend on new players.

The Blues value 28-year-old Owen - who is out of contract next summer - at between £3m-5m.

Scolari is keen to recruit a top-class striker to cover for Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.

His first choice was Brazil striker Luis Fabiano but Seville's price tag of £25m has made that move impossible.

There is concern at Stamford Bridge about Owen's injury record but they will monitor his fitness and form in the coming weeks before deciding on an offer.

Owen, who earns £108,000 a week at St James' Park, is unlikely to be offered a similar salary at Chelsea.

Financial restructuring and worries over the number of matches he has played mean a smaller deal will be offered.

A weekly wage of £60,000 could then be topped up by a playing bonus to £100,000.

Chelsea may face competition from Spurs, though, who are also on the look-out for a striker.

Boss Harry Redknapp knows a move for Owen would be cheaper than signing Jermaine Defoe, who is valued at £12m by Portsmouth.

Owen, fit again after a groin injury, believes Newcastle will continue to head up the table.

He said: "We know we're a decent team. If we have a good run, fifth, sixth or seventh place is not impossible."

Nicolas Anelka scored twice to continue his fine start to the season as Chelsea marched back to the top of the Premier League with a win at a wet Ewood Park.

In a one-sided first half, only keeper Paul Robinson kept Rovers in it, saving well from Anelka and Jon Obi Mikel.

However, he could do little when Anelka deflected in Jose Bosingwa's drive.

Rovers rallied in the second half with Petr Cech saving from Carlos Villanueva and Jason Roberts but Anelka clipped in a second to seal it.

It was the ideal response from Luiz Felipe Scolari's men following victories for title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal on Saturday. And it ensured the Brazilian would be able to enjoy his 60th birthday with another three points in the bag.

However, it was far from plain sailing for the visitors after Rovers shook off a pretty desperate opening half with a gritty, determined second 45 that kept Chelsea firmly on their toes.

Many Blackburn fans may have feared the worst when they saw that Paul Ince had opted to deploy Roberts in a lone striking role in the absence of Benni McCarthy (ban) and Roque Santa Cruz (calf). Frustrate and counter was clearly the manager's gameplan.

But in the first half, at least, it did not work. As early as the fifth minute Chelsea felt they should have had a penalty when Anelka latched on to Keith Andrews's woeful backpass only to fall over Robinson's leg with the goal at his mercy, but the appeals were waved away.

It was a sign of things to come, with Robinson saving smartly from a couple of Anelka headers and a Mikel chance six yards out, before pulling off an even better one-handed stop to beat away an Anelka hammer from 16 yards out.

On a brief counter minutes earlier, Villanueva had forced an equally smart save from Cech with a curled drive, but it was the only chance of any note for Rovers fans to cheer in the first 45.

But with standing water gathering on the pitch under the heavy rain, a half-time inspection took place before referee Chris Foy gave the all-clear to continue - and Rovers came out with a new lease of life at the restart.

Striker Matt Derbyshire's introduction ensured Chelsea finally had something to think about in defence, with Villanueva given more freedom to express himself and attack from wide.

It led to a period of sustained Blackburn pressure, with Cech again forced into action to repel Roberts's snap-shot when he wriggled free in the box.

Villanueva also blazed wide of the target on a couple of occasions as the Blues fought to wrest back the initiative but just as Rovers looked capable of a leveller, Anelka put the game beyond them.

Lampard pressed the home defence well around the box and, having forced the error, sent in Anelka, who clipped the ball over the advancing Robinson brilliantly to make it 2-0 with his 11th goal of the season.

Blackburn continued to press admirably but failed to create another clear-cut chance, and in fact it was Chelsea who went closest to another when Lampard forced Robinson to tip onto the bar with a 30-yard free-kick.

Anelka broke through for a hat-trick chance late in the closing stages but Robinson got down well to save and ensure a semblance of respectability for the home side.

Ince takes positives despite defeat

"They played well in the first half but Robinson was in fine form and made four or five great saves.
"We took the game to them in the second half and we could have got something out of the game.

"It's disappointing that our performances haven't got us the points we deserved but there is no need to panic, we just need an element of luck to push us forward."

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari:
"The pitch was dangerous in the first half because it was raining and it was very difficult for us.

"But we finished the half 1-0 and we knew if we made a second goal we would kill this team.

"Anelka is trying every day in training to make [more goals] than he has and now he has more opportunities and scores more goals and that's good for us - and for Anelka."

FA charges Drogba over coin throw

Drogba threw the coin back into a section of Burnley supporters

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association for throwing a coin back into the crowd.

Drogba hurled a coin into a section of Burnley supporters following his goal in Chelsea's shock Carling Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

He has until Monday evening to respond, with a hearing planned for Tuesday.

Team-mate Frank Lampard has called for Drogba to avoid a ban, insisting it would send the wrong message to fans.

It's not unusual to get things thrown at you and lots of abuse, too, and I think it's got to stop.

"I hope he doesn't get banned, but it's up to the FA."

The FA has also written to both Chelsea and Burnley to request information on a number of missiles thrown at Chelsea players from the Burnley section.

An FA spokesman said: "Players should be able to play football without fearing for their personal safety.

"It is totally unacceptable for players to be put in danger by supporters throwing missiles onto the pitch.

"The priority now is to work with the clubs and the police to identify the individuals involved.

"The FA wants anyone found guilty of throwing missiles to face the strongest possible action. That includes life bans from attending football matches."

Drogba, 30, made a single-finger gesture before throwing the coin back following his 27th-minute goal, but there have been no reports of any spectators being injured.

Referee Keith Stroud told the FA he had booked Drogba for going towards the opposition supporters to celebrate, but had not seen him throw the coin.

The Ivory Coast striker issued an immediate post-match apology but could still face a suspension, while the incident is also being investigated by the police.

Jamie Carragher was handed a three-match ban when he was red-carded for a similar offence in 2002.

Carragher was also interviewed by police but no further action was taken. However, he was fined by Liverpool and warned about his future conduct.

"There are two sides to it," said Chelsea midfielder Lampard. "Didier's come out and there's been a reaction, a human reaction I have to say, which Jamie Carragher made once.

"I was around Didier at the time and I don't know how many coins there were around.

"I take quite a lot of corners and it's not unusual to get things thrown at you and lots of abuse, too, and I think it's got to a stage now where it's got to stop."

"We've seen referees getting hit, too, so I think people have to take responsibility as a group."

Chelsea issued a statement in response to the FA charge, admitting Drogba's actions had been "inexcusable" and promising full co-operation with the FA and the Metropolitan Police.

"We welcome Burnley's assistance in trying to help identify the small minority of their support who spoiled a great occasion for their club," read the Chelsea statement.

"Although Didier Drogba was hit by an object, that does not excuse his subsequent actions.

"He also recognises that, has not sought to justify it that way, has sincerely expressed his regret and has apologised for the incident.

"The matter will be dealt with internally by the club after the FA and police processes are completed."

Wana-bluzz, leo tumeponea na draw!

Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

CHELSEA squandered the chance to pull clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Stubborn Newcastle held the Blues to a goalless draw as Phil Scolari's men failed to break the deadlock.

Toon keeper Shay Given saved superbly from Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole went agonisingly close with a header - but Chelsea failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s home draw with Fulham.

Inabidi muwafunge FC Cluj..mechi liyopita waliwafunga kazi mnayo.

Kumbu Kumbu zinaonyesha mechi ile iliisha suluhu...na Drogba aliumia....FC Cluj wameshinda mechi moja tu zidi ya Roma FC 2-1. Kumbuka wanakuja Stamford Bridge hawataweza chomoa pale..
