Hello mates,

I am getting an error on Windows XP Proffesional Service Pack 3 which pop ups every now and then. The pop up has a heading " 16 bit MS-DOS Subsytem" and then the words "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:0589 IP:02f5 0P:63 75 6d 65 6e Choose 'Close' to terminate the application" then there are two buttons with "Close" and "Ignore" label..If I click on close, it re-appears again and again after a short while. Looks like it is Malware & Trojan related issue, I have installed and updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware trial version and scan my sytem, as well as scan it using AVG Antivirus, though there are virus/trojans and other malicious codes detected and cleaned, still the error appears. Has anyone encountered this before and found a quick fix ? if so please share the way forward!!

Also, in hard disks there is a shortcut folder with the french words "Nouveau Dossier" as a name which when deleted is re-created again and again

First run the full system scan using updated good anti-virus package. I found Avira Antivir is the best anti-virusrus as on date. Also make sure your computer is out of all Malware, Spywares. You can use Malwarebytes Anti-malware & SuperAntiSpyware for additional
safety. Also get rid-off registry errors by CCleaner.

Finally, I was able to solve using this:-

Diagnose the problem using System Configuration Utility in windows xp.
Refer " http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=31056… " on how to use System Configuration
Utility, to diagnose the issue.

1. Click "Start", Click "Run", type "msconfig", and then click "OK". System Configuration
Utility box will open.

2. On the General tab, mark Selective Startup.

3. Uncheck Process the SYSTEM.INI File, Process WIN.INI File and Load Startup Items - all
these are just below the Selective Startup.

4. Check / Mark "Load system services".

5. Then on the main tab, go to "Services" tab.

6. Find "Security Center" and Uncheck / Unmark it.

7. Click "Ok", Again "OK". Click on "Restart" your computer.

If the problem (The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction) does not
occur, you can conclude that it is due to "Security Center" issue!

SOLUTION:-

Now, you have to disable (turn-off) the "Security Center" alert by the following
method-
•Click Start, then click on "Run" and type "Services.msc". Then "OK". Now, the
"Services" dialogue box will appear on the window screen.
•Locate the "Security Center" entry in the list
•Double-click Security Center and set it's Startup type to "Disabled".
Click "OK".

Now, configure to "Normal Startup-all devices and services" using again the "System
Configuartion Utility".

You can recheck

You can check now, on the System Configuration Utility box for "Security Center" by using Run, misconfig command.
Security Center is not in the "Services" tab!

Note:- Make sure you have a good firewall program and anti-virus with the latest definitions installed, while turning-off Security Center. Otherwise, you are making your computer will be open for all Viruses, Malwares & Spywares!!

P.S.: I have uploaded the screen shots in "http://www.scribd.com/doc/63116013/NTVD…

Ok MziziMkavu Will only be able to do this late today night, also saw similar suggestions from the results of google search, thought there is an easier route to fix this. Also the suggestion to set off Security Center makes the computer vulnerable to further attacks
