Cost comparison SGR Kenya vs SGR Tanzania

Wenzako Ethiopia ndio hawa

Few facts before we get to that:
Wanagenerate 4,300MW

-------------------------------------------
The entire railway transportation system has not been immune from a wide-area electric power blackout contributing to a series of disruption on its operations between the Addis-Djibouti rail networks.
The study Gedion and his team have conducted indicates that: “For instance, by the end of October 2019, the number of power cuts that occurred on train operation have reached to 6,742, and the overhead line reaching to 1,736.”
The frequent power cuts not only has affected the efficiency of the railway transport, but has also led to anomalous operations including rescue, slope stopping, regression, and a very serious impact on train operation safety. Some 60 percent of interruptions took close to three hours before the train’s returned to normal operations. But in some instances, three percent of the total events have caused more than a day long outages. The total interruption time was found out to be exceeding 4,800 hours since the start of railway operations across the corridor.
-----------------------------------------

Yani (Power outages in firms in a typical month (number)

The SGR Nairobi Terminal is a 15 000 sqm train terminal/station that forms one of two key stations (out of a total of eight) that make up the recently completed Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Line.
About the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR

[via wikipedia]
The Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway is a standard-gauge railway (SGR) in Kenya that connects the large Indian Ocean city of Mombasa with Nairobi, the country’s capital and largest city. This SGR runs parallel to the defunct, narrow-gauge Uganda Railway that was completed in 1901 under British colonial rule. The East African Railway Master Plan provides for the Mombasa–Nairobi SGR to link with other SGRs being built in the East African Community. At a cost of US$3.6 billion, the SGR is Kenya’s most expensive infrastructure project since independence. The prime contractor was the China Road and Bridge Corporation, which hired 25,000 Kenyans to work on the project. The railway commenced operation in mid 2017.

The SGR Nairobi Terminal
The SGR Nairobi Terminal is a 15,000-square-metre station on the southwest side of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, about 11km from the city centre and 3km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The concept behind the fluid, aerodynamic design merges the forms of a bridge, gateway and locomotive. The approach facade depicts two trains topped by a bridge, which is intended to represent an integration of the spirit of East Africa. It highlights the friendly cooperation between Kenya and China and the concept of accelerated economic growth.

The building, which has become a veritable landmark in Nairobi, is a departure from the concrete brutalist architecture that typifies the built environment, but employs curves and cladding to emphasize the idea of motion and speed, while taking into account the climate and keeping the fenestration shaded.

Taking a loan at 90% and letting Chinese doing everything even operation of ur SGR and takinga a loan of $1.46 bln out of $3.1 bln and decide on every part independently can never be the same!

What you are saying without meaning to say is that in TZ, most of the cargo doesn't need to go anywhere since Dar takes like 70% of all the cargo that lands in Dar port. Which means TZ SGR wont have that much cargo going to the hinterlands, So essentially Tz is building the SGR to benefit the likes of Rwanda and DRC who will be able to use as much as 95% of the capacity of the SGR with only 5% serving the hinterlands of Tanzania.
This is what you are saying basically.... Well, let me ask you right now, how much does Rwanda + Drc import+export through Tanzania???

In 2017 - Total Imports through Dar port
View attachment 1367207

You can see that DRC, Rwanda and Burundi combined accounted for less than 2 Million tonnes .. Other countries like Malawi and Zambia are the ones who actually imported more through Tanzanian ports.

Exports from Tz and through TZ to the port in 2017 interms of tonnes

View attachment 1367211

You can see that DRC and Rwanda + Burundi it was less than 500,000 tonnes

Source

So that makes it about 2.5M tonnes of Transit goods going in and out of Tz ports in 2017 from the three countries most likely to benefit from the SGR ...

Now based on other country's performance of rail, we know its not all the cargo will go via rail.... Only USA has more than 49% of all its cargo going via rail transport... In Europe where they have seamless cross border connectivity, only about 29% of the cargo goes via rail... So I can tell you for free that it will take a very long time for that transit cargo to reach that 95% of the SGR capacity.

------------------------------------------------
Atleast in Kenya we have Nairobi in the hinterlands so even if cargo to Uganda or South Sudan doesn't grow, Mombas to Nairobi can provide a relief and keep half of the railway line busy.... And Speaking of Uganda
----------
KAMPALA, UGANDA- Uganda still remains the predominant transit destination through Mombasa Port, with a total transit traffic of 7,112,971 tons in 2017 up from 6,346,715 tons in 2016 according to officials from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
----------

Uganda imports alone through Mombasa port takes more cargo that what Burundi+Rwanda+DRC does through Dar port..

And BTW, Kenya SGR was envisaged to carry only 40% of the cargo (most of which would be containerized) leaving trucks to carry 60% of the Cargo to from the port. SO if the Msa port was doing 40 Million tonnes, theoretically, the SGR will handle 40% of that... i.e 16 Million . And if the SGR reached its design capacity of 22 Million tonnes p.a that would mean the port of Mombasa would be doing 55 Million tonnes p.a
Tanzania has 3 ports, they dont depend solely on their central transport corridor (Train +roads)like kenya does on its mombasa-Nairobi-kisumu corridor.
Their SGR will have more free capacity to carry lucrative long range goods to neigbouring countries while kenya still has to haul cargo to nairobi..Thats the logic thats how TZ wins transit goods war

R u trying to say Mseveni hatapanda electrical trains SGR Tanzania ikikamilika?

-------------------------------------------------
In February, March, April and May there were 172, 184, 203 and 203 trains respectively transporting goods to the ICD, according to KPA reports.
Kenya Ports Authority MD Daniel Manduku yesterday said for the past six months, they have been doing an average of seven trains per day to Nairobi.
KPA introduced an ex-hook railage, whereby cargo destined for Nairobi via the SGR is offloaded from the ship and loaded straight to the waiting cargo trains,” Manduku said.
-----------------------------------------------

-----------
Alafu kumbuka hapo Tz, makontena yatashukishwa kutoka kwa meli bila mpangilio wowote, yatapekekwa hadi ruvu dry port marshaling yard ndo sasa yapangwe vizuri juu ya SGR... Hapo kutakua kuna mda umepotezwa, itapatia treni za Kenya head start ya masaa kadhaa!!!!
Port of dar is under expansion..Laytime now is 4 days Same as mombasa
Meanwhile..The confusion at Embakasi ICD nairobi add anywhere from 2 extra days to months!

If you had read an understood what I said you would have realized that Tz will never reach that capacity in the first place hata kama wataamua kusafirisha bure!!! maybe tukifika 2050 huko ndo tutasema TZ iko na aadvantage kwa transit cargo.. Lakini kwa hii miaka ya mwanzo mwanzo all people will care about is how much cargo you are carrying....

Sh2bn faulty SGR cranes lie idle
ALLAN OLINGO

© Veronique DURRUTY/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images File photo: The commercial port of Mombasa in Kenya, Africa.Six giant cranes installed at the port of Mombasa to improve the loading and unloading of containers on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) have never worked since they were brought in two years ago at a cost of Sh2 billion, the Sunday Nation can reveal.

SAFETY
The rail-mounted cranes at Port Reitz were bought by the China Road and Bridge Corporation as part of the controversial SGR operations and maintenance contract to handle cargo on the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR. However, according to sources at the port, the massive equipment malfunctioned before breaking down and being abandoned by the contractor. CRBC built and operates the Chinese-funded SGR, which is Kenya’s single largest investment.

Investigations by the Sunday Nation reveal that the SGR operations at the port now largely depend on the rubber-tyred gantry cranes and those owned by the Kenya Ports Authority with little or no explanation on why the multi-billion-shillings investment is sitting idle.

Even more puzzling is that CRBC appears to have ignored communication from the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) to ensure that the cranes are either replaced or put in use. Each of the cranes cost Sh355 million, a figure that has also raised questions.

Army soldiers patrol around the National Cricket Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan, on Feb. 22, 2020, before the start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) T20 cricket match.

A port official who was present when the cranes were first tested, but who spoke in confidence, said they dropped the containers and appeared out of control, raising safety concerns.

IGNORED
“CRBC was asked to fix the problem. They brought in experts from China who failed to resolve the issue. They seemed to have given up and abandoned them,” said our source at the port.

Despite tests and inspections by China Hoisting and Conveying Equipment Quality Supervision Centre, the suppliers, in the presence of CRBC and KRC representatives in mid-October last year, the cranes have still not been put to use, putting into doubt the viability of this investment at the expense of the taxpayer.

Documents seen by the Sunday Nation reveal that in December last year, KRC asked the Chinese SGR operator to ensure the six mounted cranes were in use. The Chinese appeared to have ignored the instructions prompting a letter in January this year to CRBC general manager for operation Li Jiuping with similar demands that has also not been responded to.

On Saturday, Mr Sandy Feng, a CRBC communications official, said the company was not in a position to address the issues raised over the usage of the cranes and referred us to KRC.

“We appreciate your concerns over this matter and the operation of the SGR. However, as for the question you have raised, we suggest that you reach out to Kenya Railways Corporation to get much of the information you are seeking,” Mr Feng said despite indications in our enquiry that his company was responsible for the procurement and operations of the cranes.

KRC did not immediately respond to the questions redirected to them. However, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia admitted that the cranes have never been used due to their operational challenges, adding that the country should expect new cranes in the next few months.

TARGET
“The cranes will be replaced by CRBC. We had a meeting with them on Thursday and that was the agreement. The first two cranes are expected to be replaced in the next few weeks. I am made to understand that their shipment has already started. Eventually, we shall get new replacements for the six,” Mr Macharia told Sunday Nation.

The situation has now forced Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to move in and use its cranes to perform the tasks that CRBC was supposed to have done, depending on eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes to assist in loading, offloading and movement of containers around the yard. The port agency has also distanced its self from the non-functioning cranes, saying they are just a host of the CRBC and KRC. KPA said its six Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) Cranes manufactured in China by ZPMC Ltd are working.

“We have an RMG station with the six cranes providing loading zones namely lines Z4, Z7, Z8, Z9 and Z10, whereby Z4 and Z9 are dedicated for loading of dangerous cargo on SGR. From these loading zones, the cranes are used to load the bloc trains. Without these six RMGs at the loading zones, then we would not be able to attain our daily target of 10-12 trains,” Mr Bernard Osero, KPA Head of Corporate Affairs, said.

BTW the same people have been attending all central corridor stakeholders consultative meetings!

Get to know the meaning of marshaling yard first SGR will get to Dar port! The current BRT to Mbagala is even having an overpass to allow SGR to go under! Hatukurupuki in planning these things mzee!

Cargo will be unload from ships n brought to ICD n marshaling yard then sorted where a 2 km train will be mounted n shunted ready to go to upcountry n Rwanda, Burundi, DRC n Uganda!

While other cargo will go to SADC countries via TAZARA! Reason being to decrease traffic of trucks that at the moment go to the port to collect cargo! Even truckers will collect their cargo at Kwala ICD in Ruvu!

Is China daily a contractor? BTW here is the definition of gross area. That neans even platform area is part of that 20,000 sq m!

Floor area
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In architectural, construction, and real estate, floor area, floor space, or floorspace is the area (measured as square feet or square metres) taken up by a building or part of it. The ways of defining "floor area" depend on what factors of the building should or should not be included, such as external walls, internal walls, corridors, lift shafts, stairs, etc. Generally there are 3 major differences in measuring floor area.[1]
  • Gross floor area (GFA) - The total floor area contained within the building measured to the external face of the external walls.
  • Gross internal area (GIA) - The floor area contained within the building measured to the internal face of the external walls.
  • Net internal area (NIA) (or usable floor area UFA) - The NIA is the GIA less the floor areas taken up by lobbies, enclosed machinery rooms on the roof, stairs and escalators, mechanical and electrical services, lifts, columns, toilet areas (other than in domestic property), ducts, and risers.
