The much-anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive has started, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. He cited the deployment of Kiev’s strategic reserves as a telltale sign of the operation.
“We can state with absolute certainty that this Ukrainian counteroffensive has begun, and the use of strategic reserves points to it,” Putin said at a press conference on Friday.
The president noted that particularly heavy fighting has been ongoing for five days, with Russian troops managing to hold their positions.
He also claimed that the Ukrainian military has suffered far heavier casualties than the “classic” three-to-one ratio often expected during an offensive.
However, Kiev has still retained its offensive capabilities, Putin said. He added that he expected Russian commanders to “assess the situation realistically” and act accordingly.
The Russian leader also acknowledged that Moscow’s troops are facing shortages of modern weapons, and expressed hope that the country’s military industry will soon be able to satisfy growing demand.

Putin attributed the purported failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive to the effectiveness of the armaments already at the disposal of Russian forces.
On Thursday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu revealed that the Ukrainian military had tried to break through Russian defenses in Zaporozhye Region. However, this attempt was thwarted by pre-emptive artillery and aerial strikes, the official claimed.
According to the minister, Kiev’s forces suffered losses running into the thousands as a result.
On Friday, Moscow stated that Ukraine had lost up to 1,240 troops and 39 tanks in just 24 hours. Dozens of armored vehicles and artillery units, including ones provided by Western countries, were also destroyed, Russian military officials claimed.
Citing anonymous senior US officials, CNN also reported that the Ukrainian military had sustained “significant” casualties this week.
The outlet’s sources described “greater than expected resistance from Russian forces.

A video emerged online on Saturday, allegedly showing a battle in which an advancing Ukrainian armored convoy, featuring German-made Leopard 2A6 tanks and US-supplied Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, was caught in a minefield and destroyed by Russian forces.
The clip, which first appeared in the Ukrainian media, was apparently shot in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region by a camera on one of the Bradleys involved in the clash, which is said to have taken place near the village of Malaya Tokmachka on Wednesday.
The video shows the US-supplied infantry fighting vehicle repeatedly firing in the direction of the nearby woods.
Two more armored vehicles in the picture appear to be abandoned, while another Bradley explodes as it passes by, after apparently hitting a mine.
The rest of the clip shows attempts by the surviving Ukrainian soldiers to evacuate under Russian fire, while trying to create a smoke screen to cover their retreat.

Aerial footage from the same battle was earlier posted by the Russian Defense Ministry and military bloggers. The clips captured several Ukrainian Leopard 2A6 tanks and Bradley vehicles being destroyed or abandoned.
The images are considered to be the first solid proof of Western armor, provided to Kiev by the West for its counteroffensive, being eliminated by the Russian military.

According to the The New York Times, which verified the authenticity of the Russian videos, Ukraine lost at least three Leopard 2 tanks and eight Bradley fighting vehicles in that battle.

Honduras has issued a formal request to join the BRICS' New Development Bank (NDB), the office of President Xiomara Castro tweeted on Saturday.

The step came as Castro met the bank’s President Dilma Rousseff during her six-day visit to China. The NDB is based in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

The Saturday developments come a week after Rousseff told Argentine Economy Minister Sergio Massa that the NDB’s board of directors formally authorized a vote on his country’s admission to the bank, which is due to be announced at its next meeting, scheduled for August
