Bus terminal
Dar es salaam City Council is currently conducting a feasibility study on the construction of the upcountry bus terminal at Mbezi Luis and Boko Basihaya in the city. Speaking to journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the City Council spokesman, Gaston Makwembe said the bus terminal at Mbezi Luis will be the first one to be constructed followed by another one at Boko Basihaya to pave way for the implementation of Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) project. Makwembe noted that the constructions of the two bus stations need thorough feasibility studies in order to come up with the actual cost of both though it was earlier estimated to cost 40bn/- upon completion. The city spokesman said in the meantime, the Ubungo Bus Terminal will continue to accommodate upcountry buses and other buses from neighbouring countries. He added that transportation stakeholders should understand that as it was planned before, the Ubungo bus terminal will be reserved for DART buses when the infrastructures are complete. “The government through the city council also plans to construct shopping malls and hotels at the Ubungo bus terminal to ease provision of services,” he said, adding that this means more money will be needed.

Speaking of the hygienic state at the bus terminal, the spokesperson said the council is planning on reviewing its by-laws so that as to issue harsh penalty on those who release themselves randomly despite the availability of toilets in the premises, adding that the Council will also add toilets especially near the administrations offices where there is 24 toilets and 10 bathrooms which don’t seem enough.

Transportation stakeholders and citizens have been urged to give their views on how the sector can be improved in the city.

This response sounds amateurish and lacks any seriousness on the part of the city planning team.

There is no excuse, despite the given explanation, for the continued appalling condition of disorganisation, filth and insecurity of life and property at UBT.

Travelers and other UBT stakeholders mustn't be subjected to filthy conditions just because you have plans to move to Mbezi or wherever!

I have suggested in JF before that it looks like there is a lack of coordination between the relevant players in the planning process to begin with.

1. If a main bus terminal like UBT must continue to cater for regional and international travellers the best location for it would be at the Dar central railway station next to the port; and not very far to and from TAZARA station as well as the JKN International airport.

2. Vertical development can facilitate location of such terminal at either TRC station or in the vicinity of TAZARA station both of which are conveniently close to the sea air ports.

3. Satellite cities of DSM can be destinations for regional transit travellers. There's no reason why someone at Mpwapwa should not go direct to Temeke or Kigamboni and vice versa! This is one way of decongesting traffic at UBT during departure and arrival times.

4. Take the time necessary to acquire the best coordinated solutions instead of short term politically motivated decisions which may cost millions of taxpayer's funds while the end result is a transfer of the problems from one point to another.
