December 11, 1474: Enrique IV, King of Castile, died at age forty-nine in Madrid. The last of the weak, late medieval Castilian kings, he was the son of Juan II and Maria of Aragón and though he had some successes in his reign, he mostly managed to alienate many of his nobles, resulting in the decentralization of power to the monarch. Fortunately he was succeeded by his brilliant and eminently capable younger half-sister, Isabella I (yes, THAT Isabella).
