Wanafunzi wa chuo Kenya waunda vifaa na kuuza China

Education CS Fred Matiang’i has flagged off to China Sh10 million mechanical parts made by Kenyan university students.

The spare parts that were flagged off on Friday were made by students of Kabete Technical Training Institute and Nyeri National Polytechnic.

They will be used in excavators, earth movers and other machines.

The institutions won first and second place respectively in the Africa Tech Challenge.

In an address at Kabete TTI, Matiang'i praised the students and urged those who have completed secondary education to venture into technical training.

He said courses in the field equip students with skills that make finding and creating jobs easier.

Matiang'i said the government will invest more in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to help meet its development needs.

He noted that self-employment will be boosted and poverty reduced.

The CS was accompanied by Vocational and Technical Training PS Dinah Mwinzi and administration officials from Kabete TTI, and Nyeri Polytechnic.

The tech challenge was aimed at encouraging enrollment in technical courses, creating employment and providing skilled workers for the government and private sector.

It was organised by the Education ministry and China's AVIC International Holding Corporation.

whether they made it and/or designed it. this was a competition for technical schools in all of africa to make spare parts for existing excavators, so I would imagin it was to make them to pre-existing 'specification', and in that competion, two technical scools from Kenya, performed the best out of all the schools from africa that were in the competion and were thus awarded with a 10million contract + necessary equipment.
so if the specification was from china, its not different from what china has been doing in the last decade, from, lenovo, DELL, HP, all Apple products...You name it, they are all made in china and designed somewhere else... and thats the edge that china used to move from third world to where they are. they did that until they reached a point where they started revers engineering to make 'fake' products until they had enough expertise to design and make there own.....

Anyways, bottomline is, yesterday, students from those two technical schools were just students going about their bussiness, today those students have 10million, necessary equipments, a contract and real life experience, since kenya imports chinies excavators, who is to stop them from supplying the local market with 100% locally made spare parts that will utilise our own iron ore to make steel.... besides, I dont think its the job of technical studets to design things, thats a job for engineering degree holders........

so since the tecnical stidents can perfectly do there jobs according to specification as far as Africa is concerned, who is to say that tomorrow they wont make something designed by local engineers, huh! ?
