Virgil van Dijk's Liverpool future is in doubt as Reds skipper reveals he has NOT been offered a new contract despite his current deal ending next summer

There is still no contract offer on the table for Virgil van Dijk as the Liverpool captain enters the final season of his Reds deal.

Liverpool put in a convincing display as they beat Spanish side Sevilla 4-1 at Anfield on Sunday – Luis Diaz netted a brace as Diogo Jota and teenager Trey Nyoni also scored – to make it four wins from four in front of a crowd to begin the Arne Slot era.

It was the first minutes under Slot for Van Dijk after the Dutchman returned from a three-week break after the European Championship. And the defender says there is still no movement on signing a new deal at the club.

Asked about the issue, Van Dijk groaned and chuckled slightly due to the question being one he gets asked almost weekly during the club season. And he said: ‘There is no change at the moment.’

It is a worrying issue for Liverpool and new sporting director Richard Hughes, who is yet to make a first-team signing since joining from Bournemouth and officially starting his role at the Merseyside club in June.

Star forward Mohamed Salah and local lad Trent Alexander-Arnold, the vice-captain, also only have 11 months remaining on their current contracts. It means that without intervention, three of Liverpool’s prized assets will not be at the club this time next year.

Van Dijk said in the spring that he wanted to see what things were like under the new coaching regime before committing his future to the club and, asked about his first impressions of Slot, he said: ‘So far so good.

‘Obviously a lot of work that we do at the training ground – tactical, physicality as well to get fit. Today was the last big test before we start with the real deal and I feel like we're ready for that. Hopefully we can show that as well because going there (Ipswich) on Saturday, it's going to be tough.

‘We have communication with each other and a lot of tactical meetings where we see what we can improve. The finer details are very important in order to improve our game and I think that's what we all want. We all have to show that desire – and so far, so good.’
