---
A high-speed railway line connecting the Baltic states to Poland and the rest of Europe has started construction.

The $4 billion Rail Baltica project aims to connect the capitals of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with Warsaw, a physical and symbolic move to bring those former Soviet states closer to the European Union at a time of high tension between Western Europe and Russia.

Russia's actions in Ukraine have heightened the Baltic states' sense of urgency to reduce their dependency on Russian infrastructure and energy supplies.

Historically, the Baltic countries have relied on railway systems that use the Russian gauge, a remnant of their time under Soviet influence, but Rail Baltica will adopt the European standard gauge.

The project is a massive undertaking, both in scope and in financial terms. With an estimated cost of €5.8 billion, Rail Baltica is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the region. The European Union has shown strong support for the project, funding up to 85% of the costs through the Connecting Europe Facility.
What We Know

Rail Baltica is designed to span 870 kilometers and the high-speed rail line will accommodate trains traveling at speeds of up to 234 km/h, dramatically reducing travel times and improving passenger and freight transport efficiency. The project's completion is expected by 2030, and it promises to bring substantial economic benefits, including the creation of 36,000 jobs and increased trade opportunities, the consortium behind the project said.

The ERB Rail JV consortium is made up of Budimex (Poland), Eiffage Génie Civil SAS (France), and Rizzani de Eccher (Italy).
Views

"We are making a strategic investment for our entire region, " said Artur Popko, general manager and chairman of Budimex's Management Committee in a press release.

"It is an honor to be chosen to build Rail Baltica, and it is also a challenge, given the scope of the project," the press release stated.

What's Next

Rail Baltica said its train services will include a fast rail connection between the Baltic capitals every two hours. High-speed trains from Tallinn to Warsaw and Tallinn to Vilnius are expected to run four times daily, while up to ten trains per day will operate on the Vilnius-Kaunas-Warsaw route. Additionally, there will be two night trains on the Tallinn-Riga-Kaunas-Warsaw-Berlin and Vilnius-Kaunas-Warsaw-Berlin routes. Travelers will be able to reach Riga International Airport from Riga Central Station in approximately 10 minutes, with at least one train every 30 minutes.

As construction progresses, the focus will be on ensuring the project's timely completion and maximizing its economic and strategic benefits. The Baltic states are also working on synchronizing their power grids with the European network by 2025, further reducing their reliance on Russia.

Hiyo tenda wampe mjerumani. Kama ailweza kijenga reli ya kati kwa miaka miwili zama za ujima nadhani kwa sasa kulivyo na tecnology anaweza akajenga kwa miezi miwili tu
