List of African countries by inequality-adjusted HDI

Below is a list of African countries' level of human development when inequality is accounted for as per UNDP data. In brackets is the country's HDI before accounting for inequality and the percentage loss in HDI

The inequality-adjusted HDI actually gives a reflection of the living standard of the average citizen rather than the normal HDI which just divides the specific living standards of each income group by the total population

1. Mauritius - 0.683 (0.790, 13.5%)
2. Algeria - 0.598 (0.745, 20.7%)
3. Tunisia - 0.573 (0.735, 22%)
4. Gabon - 0.545 (0.702, 22.3%)
5. Egypt - 0.493 (0.696, 22.9%)
6. São Tomé - 0.473 (0.589, 14.3%)
7. Rep. of Congo - 0.469 (0.606, 22.6)
8. South Africa - 0.467 (0.699, 33.2%)
9. Kenya - 0.434 (0.590, 26.4%)
10. Namibia - 0.422 (0.647, 34.8%)
11. Ghana - 0.420 (0.592, 28.9%)
12. Eswatini - 0.414 (0.588, 29.7)
13. Tanzania- 0.404 (0.538, 24.8%)
14. Angola - 0.393 (0.581, 32.4%)
15. Zambia- 0.388 (0.588, 34.1%0
It is stunning just how deep southern Africa's inequality is. The life of the average South African or Namibian is just about the same as that of the average Kenyan and Ghanaian.

Also a point to note is that development wise for the average citizen, the North leads followed while the larger countries of Southern and East Africa are generally at the same level

East african countries zinajitahid.. Tho we need to pull up our socks kupunguza inequality...we should also control our population growth

I think HDI is the ultimate access of the real living standards of average citizens in a particular country, far much better than GDP/per capita,i must say am impressed by egypt-with its huge population(over 100m),way above SA with half its population, generally north africans countries are managed better than sub sahara africa, you can see its reflecting on living standards,in terms of physical infrastructure SA is still way ahead any african country-it will take time before the rest of africa catches up with them, but in terms of standards of living kenya, ghana are at per with them with the exception of white minority who are at per with their original homeland europe.

Your statement is highly contradictory.

"Southern Africa" simply means all countries South of the equator.

Once you use term "Southern Africa" You can't therefore seperate individual contries of Southern Africa statistically. You either bring forth statistical data of individual countries and let them remain as statistics of the said country ndividually or term them as "Southern Africa" and bring forth statistical data as a whole of Southern Africa and do not separate them.

Just to remind you, it is against the law in Tanzania to publish statistics which are not authorised by GoT authorised authorities.

Yeah eygpt kiukweli wako vzur..ku manage tht population..it also gives us hope.kwamba we can do it all other african countries

Kama ningekua rais ningeamuru nchi iache kutumia GDP kama kipimo cha uchumi na tuanze kutumia iHDI ....
Yani unapima vitu kama access to clean water, quality of public education, health care infrastructure, availability of medicine, mortality rate .... Hizo zote ndo tutumie kupima uchumi na kila mwaka tunalenga kuboresha hizo na si kuboresha GDP bila kuangalia effect yake kwa wananchi kama tunavyofanya kawaida

what are you on about? You just baying for an argument or what because your second paragraph is really tinkering towards strawman jabs. I only posted wishing to show how life is for the average mwananchi in the continent and it"s visible how each region generally performed

What are we talking about here? Once its an average it means all. How can you differentiate average?

Kiukweli..ile ni ishu kubwa sana ni ngumu sana kwa kusema utamatch speed ya ku provide social services na employment..na speed ya popn growth...by this i dont mean we are not expanding social services ..but at the end of the day Government will be burden by a huge social services gap....its not the best move ila ssa utafanyaje ...Nigeria wameona cha moto wanakipata

Point yako ni nzuri sana, GDP is just a garbage. Hata huyu mzee anakubaliana nawe...
