"We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundations, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives."

Reason Behind Their Divorce After 27 Years

There are several media reports doing rounds about Melinda and Bill Gates split. A DNA report said that Melinda has previously suggested that Bill Gates was facing trouble in balancing work and family.

Other media reports said that there was another woman lurking in Bill Gates's life. He had an unusual arrangement with his wife that allowed him while they were married to spend a long weekend with his former girlfriend Ann Winblad every year, according to Time magazine.

Gates and Winblad, who was five years his senior, had broken off in 1987 because she was ready for marriage, but he wasn't, according to the magazine. But they stayed in touch.

Speaking to the magazine for a 1997 article, he said, "When I was off on my own thinking about marrying Melinda, I called Ann and asked for her approval."

An Irretrievably Broken Marriage

According to TMZ, a media outlet that is up on celebrity affairs, Melinda Gates filed for the divorce asserting that their marriage was "irretrievably broken". TMZ, which said it had seen the filings in a Seattle court, the couple, who jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, does not have a pre-nuptial agreement on splitting their wealth that many ultra-wealthy couples make to lessen the likelihood of disputes should they break up.

Melinda Has Refused Alimony

People magazine reported that they will have a separation agreement to divide their wealth.

Melinda Gates filed for a temporary order that would prevent either of them from disposing property or making changes to insurance policies unless they agreed in writing or court-ordered it, the magazine reported.

She is not asking for any payment of spousal support, it added.

The high-profile couple is blessed with three children, son Rory John, 21, and daughters Phoebe Adele, 18, and Jennifer Katharine, 25, who are all adults, they will not have the headache of child custody arrangements.

Bill, who is one of the richest people in the world, has often emphasized in interviews that his children should only inherit a small part of his wealth.

Net-Worth of Bill Gates

The financial magazine Forbes has estimated he is worth more than $100 billion.

How Did Bill And Melinda Meet?

According to reports, Melinda Gates was an employee of Microsoft where she met Bill Gates.
They first met for a dinner in 1987 and later began dating leading to their marriage on New Year's Day in 1994.

Melinda Gates had been seeking a divorce from Bill since 2019 after his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein became public, the WSJ reports

  • Melinda Gates reportedly considered divorce for two years before officially filing for one.
  • She’s met with several lawyers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
  • The announcement of the Gates’ divorce rocked philanthropic and tech communities last week.

Melinda Gates has been meeting with divorce lawyers for years before deciding to split up from Bill Gates, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The two have been married for 27 years and announced on May 3 that their union would come to an end.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” a joint statement posted to Twitter said. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”
The decision rocked the philanthropic and tech communities but was a long time coming, according to the Journal.
Melinda has been in conversation with divorce lawyers since 2019 before finally filing for divorce, the Journal reported.

She’s worked with lawyers across multiple firms to fix a marriage that was “irretrievably broken.”
Neither Bill nor Melinda revealed yet what led to the split. But a report that Melinda had been upset at her soon-to-be ex-husband’s connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is speculated to be one of the main reasons, the Journal reported.
With the Gateses now splitting up, sources told the outlet that Bill’s friendship with Epstein – who had already pleaded guilty to soliciting an underage girl in 2008 when the two first connected in 2011 – “still haunts” Melinda Gates.
According to the outlet, the couple met with Epstein in New York City at his Upper East Side mansion in September 2013. Sources told the Daily Beast that soon after the meeting, Melinda told friends of her discomfort during the encounter. Several people close to the couple reportedly said she was “furious” over her husband’s relationship with Epstein.
After the New York Times reported Bill’s meeting with Epstein in October 2019, Melinda called her advisers multiple times, documents reviewed by the Journal say.
The two said in their joint Twitter statement that they planned to continue to work together on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“We continue to share a belief in that mission,” they said.

Bill and Melinda Gates divorce won't end their foundation partnership

(CNN Business)Bill Gates's 2020 resignation from Microsoft's board of directors came after the board hired a law firm to investigate a romantic relationship he had with a Microsoft employee, according to new reporting from the Wall Street Journal.
Citing "people familiar with the matter," the Journal reported Sunday that a Microsoft engineer had "alleged in a letter that she had a sexual relationship over years with Mr. Gates."
"During the probe, some board members decided it was no longer suitable for Mr. Gates to sit as a director at the software company he started and led for decades," the Journal reported. "Mr. Gates resigned before the board's investigation was completed."
The employee was not named in the Journal's article. CNN has not confirmed the allegations cited by the Journal.

"Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to CNN Business late Sunday. "A committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm, to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern."
In a statement to the Journal, a spokesperson for Gates said, "There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably. Bill's decision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter. In fact, he had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier."
The spokesperson also pointed to a March 2020 statement regarding his decision to resign from the board.
The WSJ's story was published soon after a separate New York Times article that reported Gates had "developed a reputation for questionable conduct in work-related settings."
The Times reported, citing "people with direct knowledge with overtures," that "on at least a few occasions, Mr. Gates pursued women who worked for him at Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation."

The Times did not cite the names of the people involved.
Gates' spokesperson told the Times that, "It is extremely disappointing that there have been so many untruths published about the cause, the circumstances and the timeline of Bill Gates' divorce."
The spokesperson said that the "claim of mistreatment of employees is also false," and that "the rumors and speculation surrounding Gates' divorce are becoming increasingly absurd and it's unfortunate that people who have little to no knowledge of the situation are being characterized as 'sources.'"
CNN has not confirmed the allegations cited by the Times. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday night.
Earlier this month, Melinda Gates — Bill Gates' wife and co-founder of their foundation — filed for divorce. In a statement announcing their split, the couple said, "after a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage."
Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world. His net worth was $144 billion as of today, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranking.
