SIOUX CITY, Iowa - A terrible bus crash in Tanzania left 35 dead with just three survivors.

Missionaries from Sioux City, Iowa passed by this tragic scene, but little did they know, they were about to change lives forever.

"I'm just so incredibly grateful to God that we were an hour and a half late that day and we came upon the accident and were able to help with the kids that were here and everything fell into place for them to get here," says Jennifer Milby, missionary that helped save children.

The survivors--Wilson, Sadia and Doreen-- were taken to a hospital in Tanzania just five minutes away from the crash site, but doctors there couldn't provide the care they needed.

After multiple calls and texts to try to get them transferred to America, one phone call from Dr. Steve Meyer to Congressman Steve King is the reason these three kids are alive today.

"The tragedy in Tanzania was so utterly awful. The carnage of humanity, the loss that was there... these people went through it, some of them faced it there. They did a lot. Me? I found myself in a position where I got to be a link in this chain but the tragedy was so awful that we all had to bring about an extraordinary effort to try to put together an ability to bring relief and bring health to these children,' says King.

By pulling some strings in the U.S. Embassy and a generous donation of a plane ride by the Samaritan's Purse, all three kids will make it.

"Why would people from a far away place in Sioux City, Iowa care enough about three broken children--literally broken children--to go to this length just for three," says Meyer.

The past week for these children has been long and painful. Neurosurgeons at Mercy hospital treating multiple broken bones, lacerations, more than 17 fractures and even a spinal surgery.

Wilson says even though his only experience in America has been in a hospital, he's nothing but smiles.

"What do you love about America?" asks Meyer.
""Everything," says Wilson, bus crash survivor.

When news first broke about these children getting cared for in America, the amount of generous help from the community... was overwhelming.

"This community is really a light for the country and really for the world," says King.

Many were fearful the kids might not make it.

"Without the surgical procedure, prognosis was extremely poor but it is now very hopeful," says Neurosurgeon Quentin Durward.

"I had a fear that we wouldn't get it done, but I never thought that I was out of ideas or that I would stop trying. Unless we lost the kids and it were over, I was going to keep trying," says King.

But with a miraculous recovery...

"It's been one miracle after another," says Meyer.

Everyone is expressing gratitude.

"I can say thank you," says Wilson.

"American people are good and we love you. We love you so much," says Wilson's mother.
