THE soul of a 100 year-old woman who was buried in Nakaseke on Monday was not allowed to rest in eternal peace by unknown people who broke into the grave and stole the body a few hours after the burial.

The body of the late Manjeeri Nalubwama was discovered stolen on Tuesday morning, a day after she was buried at her family grave yard at Mifunya village, Nakaseke sub-county in Nakaseke District.

The deceased who died of old age, had been buried on Monday afternoon in a function that was organized by the Uganda Funeral Services and attended by hundreds of mourners among who were several bishops.

The assailants, who are believed to have swung into action on Monday night, left behind the executive white coffin in which the deceased had been buried.

A teenage grandson to the deceased who is said to have been the first to discover the anomaly fainted following the discovery and lay unconscious as residents thronged the late woman’s home after hearing the bizarre news.

The OC of Nakaseke Police Station, Dickson Turyatemba, whose men combed the surrounding bushes in a vain attempt to recover the stolen corpse, said the assailants could have been driven by ritual motives.

Turyatemba said Police had opened a case file over the incident whose reference number is 07/14/06/16 as investigations continue.

He said the assailants could have carried away the body using a car which they parked about 600m away from the grave; basing his judgment on the tyre marks which the police discovered in the neighbourhood.

A sobbing daughter of the deceased, Zerida Nakiyimba said there had been no disagreements among family members over where the deceased would be buried and was shocked to learn that the body had been stolen.

The village LC1 chairman Samuel Kato, one of the people who participated in the Monday burial said he was informed about the theft of the body at around 6.00 am on Tuesday.
